Southern Crescent Technical College held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday morning, December 9. The ceremony marked the start of renovations for the college’s new Henry County Center for Education and Entrepreneurship in McDonough.
The center is located at the intersection of highway 81 and Lakemont Drive. The college will renovate an existing commercial structure. They estimate a 12–18 month timeframe for the project.
Center for Education and Entrepreneurship
When complete, the Center for Education and Entrepreneurship will provide additional space for academic and workforce training programs. Specifically, the building will house new instructional space for culinary arts students. Plans also call for a coffee shop and bakery open to the public.
In addition, the center seeks to help entrepreneurs. The center will provide community members with resources to help launch or grow small businesses.
Finally, the new building also helps with visibility for the college. The property will allow Southern Crescent to install new signage along highway 81. The Henry County campus of the college is further down Lakemont Drive.
Funding for the new center was allocated during the state’s FY 2021 budget. A budget of $6.7 million dollars provides for the acquisition of the property, design and construction for the building renovations. The building measures 26,000 square feet.
Henry County campus
Presently, the Henry County campus has two buildings. Most recently, the state finished Building B in 2019. The 80,000 square foot building was funded in part by Henry County SPLOST V dollars.
The campus first opened in 2014 with Building A. Henry County Schools, the city of McDonough and Henry County all collaborated to open a technical college in the community. The campus master plan calls for up to eight buildings.
