Voters on Tuesday, November 2, elected new mayors in McDonough and Hampton. Beginning on January 1, Sandra Vincent and Ann Tarpley will lead the two cities. Both seats were open following the decisions not to seek re-election by Mayors Copeland and Hutchison.
Sandra Vincent to lead county seat
Mayor-elect Sandra Vincent previously represented district 2 on the McDonough city council. She won Tuesday night with 52% of the vote.
Vincent received 1,338 votes compared to 861 votes for Craig Elrod. Third-place challenger Tony Brown received 365 votes. 2,580 voters participated out of the city’s 18,796 registered voters. This amounts to 14% voter turnout.
Three new faces will join the McDonough city council. They include the following:
- Councilwoman At-Large Vanessa Thomas, defeating incumbent Roger Pruitt 1,157 votes to 858. Darryl Payton finished in third place with 492 votes.
- Councilman for district 2 Jamal L. Burt, with 465 votes. His seat was uncontested.
- Councilman for district 3 Scott Reeves, receiving 540 votes. Others finished accordingly: Terrell Tyson 334 votes, Janice Scotchman 270 votes and Bridgette Westly 96 votes.
In city district 1, Councilman Rufus L. Stewart received 237 votes to retain his seat. Challenger Toneen Brown had 113 votes.
Ann Tarpley wins in Hampton
Ann Tarpley previously served on the Hampton city council. Now, she will lead the city as mayor.
Tarpley received 660 votes to 616 votes for Stephanie Bodie. A total of 1,310 voters weighed in. The city has 5,809 registered voters for 23% turnout.
In the city council election, voters could choose three candidates. Seven candidates qualified for the election. Results included the following, sorted by vote total:
- Devlin Cleveland – 716
- Sheila L. Barlow – 608
- Willie Turner (I) – 598
- Errol Mitchell (I) – 564
- Pamela Duchesne – 480
- Shawn Black – 344
- Yaunte R. Dvine – 117
Anthony Ford wins re-election in Stockbridge
Stockbridge Mayor Anthony S. Ford won re-election for another term. Both incumbent council members also won re-election.
Mayor Ford received 1,400 votes compared to challenger Bruce Smith Sr. with 424 votes. The election saw 10% turnout — 1,853 voters out of 19,063 registered voters.
Voters could choose two candidates in the city council election. Results saw the following:
- LaKeisha T. Gantt (I) – 1,381
- Alphonso Thomas (I) – 901
- Shirley Wallace – 686
- Antonio Harris – 322
- Derek Mouzon – 97
No election was held in Locust Grove because only three candidates qualified. The three candidates, all presently on the council, will serve another term.
