Henry County voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, November 2, for municipal elections. In addition, transportation SPLOST is on the ballot countywide. Polls will be open from 7 am to 7 pm.
Residents in Hampton and McDonough must elect new mayors. Mayors Steve Hutchison and Billy Copeland are not seeking re-election. In Stockbridge, Mayor Anthony Ford faces a challenge from Bruce Smith. Council positions are also on the ballot in all three cities.
New Mayors
Hampton residents have two candidates running for mayor. Both have served on the city council. They include Stephanie Bodie and Ann Tarpley.
Similarly, two council members are running for mayor in McDonough. A third candidate also appears on the ballot. Starting in January, the county seat will be led by one of the following:
- Tony Brown
- Craig Elrod
- Sandra Vincent
Residents can check their polling place by visiting the state’s My Voter Page. City polling places are different than the county polling places.
City Council
In addition to mayor, city council seats are also on the ballot. Hampton and Stockbridge use at-large seats. This means every resident votes for every seat on the council.
Hampton voters can select three candidates from the following:
- Sheila L. Barlow
- Shawn Black
- Devlin Cleveland
- Pamela Duchesne
- Yaunte R. Dvine
- Errol Mitchell*
- Willie Turner*
Stockbridge voters can select two candidates from the following:
- LaKeisha Gantt*
- Antonio Harris
- Derek Mouzon
- Ezekiel Pettway
- Alphonso Thomas*
- Shirley Wallace
Note: incumbents are marked with an asterisk*.
McDonough Council
McDonough is unique in that council members represent districts. This year, one at-large seat is on the ballot in addition to districts 1 & 2. Also, district 3 has a special election to fill the unexpired term of Craig Elrod. Elrod had to resign because he is running for mayor.
All city residents can vote for the at-large seat. Incumbent Roger Pruitt has two challengers, Darryl Payton and Vanessa Thomas.
District 1 features incumbent Rufus L. Stewart vs Toneen Brown. District 2 is uncontested by Jamal L. Burt. Mayoral candidate Sandra Vincent previously held the district 2 seat.
Finally, there are four candidates in the special election for district 3. They include the following:
- Scott Reeves
- Janice Scotchman
- Terrell Tyson
- Bridgette Westly
The winner in district 3 will have a two-year term. All others would serve four years. Residents can check their council district on the state’s My Voter Page linked above.
Transportation SPLOST
Last but not least, there’s a countywide referendum for transportation SPLOST. All Henry County voters can participate in this vote.
Transportation SPLOST would be a new one-cent local sales tax for road projects. The county and cities would divide the funds based on population if the vote passes. Moving Henry Forward previously shared the project lists: Henry County | McDonough & Stockbridge | Hampton & Locust Grove
Sales tax collections would begin in April 2022 if voters approve the program. The five-year program is estimated to collect $245 million dollars if approved.
