The Henry County school board is onboard with district staff pursuing the establishment of a Junior Achievement Discovery Center in McDonough following this week’s board of education meeting. District staff presented the possibility as one part of a broader strategy to expand the Academy for Advanced Studies.
The Academy for Advanced Studies offers high school students the opportunity to receive technical career path training while in school. The potential discovery center would increase exposure of the academy to middle school students.
Discovery centers provide sixth and eighth grade students with a one-day simulation of the business environment or managing their personal finances aligned with their grade level and education standards. Existing centers in Georgia are located at the Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta, Forsyth and Gwinnett Counties, and a fourth center is under construction in Dalton.
This year, students at Stockbridge and Union Grove Middle are participating in the program. Establishing a center in McDonough would guarantee participation for all middle schoolers in Henry County as the home district.
Board members indicated the go-ahead for Superintendent Davis to submit a letter of interest to Junior Achievement. Next steps will include collaborating with JA to explore the feasibility of hosting a discovery center at the Academy for Advanced Studies.
