Henry County commissioners approved this week the abandonment of a portion of Fortson Road in Hampton. The now-abandoned road will be closed off to public access and absorbed into development plans for a new industrial park west of the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Lower Woolsey Henry 780, LLC applied for and received rezoning to M-1 for 683 acres in 2018. The land owners transferred 113 acres to the University of Georgia for future use by the neighboring 4-H Camp shortly thereafter leaving 570 acres for industrial development.
The rezoning request proposed 6.1 million square feet of industrial space in seven warehouses. The traffic impact study estimated 8,862 new daily vehicle trips will be generated after build-out.
The Lower Woolsey Road industrial project is unique as the only industrial rezoning request to be approved by Henry County since January 2017. Last month, nearby land owners representing almost two-thousand acres were annexed into the city of Hampton. Though the owners did not state their future development intentions, industrial development is one possibility.
