Georgia DOT has awarded a contract to Peek Pavement Marking, LLC to install rumble strips along select state highways within Henry County. State Route 42 (Clayton County line to SR 16 in Jackson) and SR 155 (McDonough to Spalding County line) will receive the additional safety feature.
The $1,434,076.38 contract has an estimated completion date of June 30, 2020. Henry County is included within project 0015781 installing rumble strips within GDOT District 3 Area 1 (Butts, Henry, Lamar, Pike, Spalding, Talbot, Taylor, and Upson Counties).
What are rumble strips?
Rumble strips are indented sections of pavement to alert drivers if they begin to exit the roadway. Rumble strips will be installed along the center-line and edge-line of the highway.
According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), more than half of fatal crashes occur after a driver crosses the edge or center-line of a roadway. Nearly two-thirds of those happen in rural areas.
Within Georgia, 250 roadway departure fatal crashes occurred last year. Shoulder rumble strips are an FHWA proven countermeasure aimed to prevent roadway departure crashes. In addition, centerline rumble strips help prevent head-on, opposite direction and sideswipe fatal and injury crashes.
