Georgia DOT postponed a project to widen Jonesboro Road in July 2018 following budget review and adjustments. The project plans to widen the roadway between I-75 in McDonough and US 19 / 41 in Lovejoy.
As of fall 2019, the project is budgeted to resume preliminary engineering in 2030 and enter construction in 2035. The improvements have been postponed several times and were first designed starting in 2006.
To support the existing roadway until such time the widening can occur, Henry County has applied for federal funding to resurface the road. The county will learn in late winter 2020 if that request will be fulfilled, and if so, in which fiscal year.
Georgia DOT has a second widening project that would continue the four-lane segment from US 19 / 41 to SR 54 in Fayetteville. Those improvements are planned for construction in 2038. GDOT has added a bridge replacement over the Flint River, starting design work in 2021, to expedite that portion of the project.
