Public Hearing held for Gardner 42 on April 16
400 acres of warehousing pending before Locust Grove
Construction started on August 15. The old peach stand was torn down to begin clearing the site.
The Gardner 42 project was approved for rezoning by the Locust Grove city council on May 7. The vote was 5-0, with one abstaining.
The 120-acre project located north of Marketplace Blvd and east of US 23 / SR 42 plans to build two warehouses on the site of the former peach orchard. Construction may now proceed following the vote to rezone to M-1 (light manufacturing).
At the public hearing in April, Moving Henry Forward editor Clayton Carte was one of only three speakers. Clayton was the only speaker in opposition to the project and encouraged the council to think bigger than warehouses and consider a combination of medium density residential and commercial.
Councilman Gardner recused himself voluntarily because the land is owned by a first cousin. Georgia law only requires recusal for connections to immediate family members (parent, spouse, sibling, or child) and we appreciate the council member’s decision to go above what the law requires.
A separate warehouse project within the city, ClayCo phase II, will have a public hearing in the fall. The applicant is working through permitting with the Army Corps of Engineering before proceeding with rezoning.
