The city of Locust Grove and the Georgia Department of Transportation have partnered to provide improvements along Bill Gardner Parkway and State Route 42. Work on Bill Gardner is nearing completion of design work and widening along Georgia 42 is scheduled to start construction in 2023.
The city of Locust Grove will be the project sponsor to install a center median along Bill Gardner Parkway between I-75 and US 23 / GA 42. This will convert the existing center turn lane into designated left-hand turn lanes. This will improve safety by removing a driver’s ability to cut across opposing lanes, and direct merging traffic to make right-turns followed by a U-turn.
The Georgia Department of Transportation will be the project sponsor along US 23 / GA 42. The project will build a second southbound travel lane between Bill Gardner Parkway and Peeksville Road. This will assist the evening backup between the two major junctions. To facilitate the additional lane, the city will be converting the intersection of Bill Gardner Parkway and Georgia 42 into a two-lane roundabout. The roundabout will allow for the continuous free flow of one lane from Bill Gardner to 42 southbound. Georgia DOT is also evaluating the installation of a roundabout at Marketplace Boulevard and Georgia 42 pending additional funding.
A long-range project is to rebuild the I-75 interchange with additional capacity but will not proceed until after the Bethlehem Road interchange is completed, because of budget constraints. The improvements being implemented now will support the continued growth of Locust Grove and improve the existing local congestion.
