McDonough is hiring a consultant to evaluate and inventory city streets for 2023. The city last conducted this work in 2015.

When complete, the road scores will better equip city staff to prioritize roads for repair and resurfacing. The company will also be looking at city signage.

McDonough Streets Evaluate 2023

StreetScan of Wakefield, MA will complete the city’s streets evaluation at a cost of $81,499. Transportation SPLOST funds will pay for the work. The cost breakdown includes the following:

  1. Data Collection – $ 35,045
  2. Software Modules & Asset Management – $14,000
  3. 360º Streetview Imagery – $8,350
  4. Traffic Signs Inventory – $24,104

StreetScan has experience in the Atlanta area. Most recently, they were in Covington at Christmas time. Henry County previously contracted for similar work — though not with StreetScan — in 2020.

How It Works

The company will scan each roadway via a moving vehicle. This will include all city streets, to include subdivisions, totaling about five-hundred roads. The scan identifies potholes, cracks and the general condition of the roadway. Then, StreetScan will provide the city with a ranking of road conditions.

McDonough estimates they have 167 miles under their maintenance. The company will verify this amount. This figure is important because it affects annual LMIG funding from Georgia DOT. The state considers a city’s population and road mileage when granting funds. This year, GDOT considered McDonough to have 101 miles when dividing the grant.

In addition, the consultant will take an inventory of city signs. McDonough staff estimate they have over three-thousand road signs. Afterwards, the city will look into updating signs such as the city limit markers.

The city anticipates the scoring will be complete no later than a couple months.
