A bridge originally constructed in 1948 will soon be replaced. GDOT awarded a contract on July 31 to replace the bridge on state route 81 over the South River.
The low bid was awarded to Wright Brothers Construction Company, Inc. of Charleston, TN in the amount of $4,299,065.91. The contract completion date is November 30, 2021.
When complete, the new bridge will be 345’ in length and feature a deck width of 43.25’ including an eight foot shoulder on each side. By comparison, the existing bridge is 27’ wide.
An offsite detour will be required during bridge demolition and construction. The detour is planned to be signed along state routes 20 and 212.
There are no long-term plans to widen state route 81 to four lanes in the vicinity of the bridge; therefore, two travel lanes will remain on the new bridge. In locations where additional lanes are planned, like the railroad overpasses on Rock Quarry Road and the new Campground Road extension, bridges have been built with excess space for the future lanes.
