Henry County has approved hiring a design engineer for the Jonesboro Road widening (west), phase II, project. The widening project will extend from North Mt. Carmel Road to Clayton County. The design contract will be paid for by SPLOST VI.
Jonesboro Road west widening, Phase II, design
Henry County received proposals in January 2025 for the design of Jonesboro Road west, Phase II. The county received six proposals from interested engineering firms. After staff’s evaluation, Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. of Atlanta ranked the highest. They provided a fee in the amount of $3,474,000.00.
Funding is available in SPLOST VI to pay for the design work. The SPLOST VI program budgeted $3.5 million for the project design. The road widening project is a joint project between districts 2 and 5.
The design will be to expand the existing two-lane Jonesboro Road to a four-lane divided highway. A sidewalk / pedestrian path is also part of all county widening projects. One notable aspect of the project would be a new bridge over Walnut Creek. The project covers a length of about 3.7 miles. Design work for a major road widening project typically lasts about 1-2 years.
At this time, funding is not yet identified for right of way and construction. Jonesboro Road, like many other county projects, will be a candidate for possible funding in T-SPLOST 2. Henry County voters will consider T-SPLOST 2 in 2026.
Jonesboro Road, Phase I
A separate project will widen Jonesboro Road from Interstate 75 to North Mt. Carmel Road. This represents phase I of the Jonesboro Road west widening. Henry County is presently buying right of way for the project. The county has acquired about 53% of the necessary right of way. The widening project is part of T-SPLOST.
Lastly, three other projects in the immediate area are the Flippen Road extension, western parallel connector, and Mill Road widening. The Flippen Road extension and WPC are under construction. Henry County expects to bid out Mill Road for construction this year.
