State and county officials gathered this week to celebrate the topping out event for NewCold. They are a new automated cold storage facility coming to McDonough. The project represents one of the largest corporate investments in Henry County history.

NewCold is located on highway 42 near King Mill Road. The topping out commemorates the end of vertical construction for the facility.

NewCold Topping Out

The Netherlands-based NewCold announced in 2022 their plans to locate in McDonough. The new facility represents a $333 million dollar investment. At the time of the announcement, it was the largest corporate investment in county history. NewCold is also the largest investment by a foreign company to locate in the county.

The new facility will use advanced robotics and automation to provide frozen cold storage. When complete, the facility will support a variety of food suppliers. NewCold executives described the facility as the future of warehousing. They also shared the location will support more higher-earning positions than a typical warehouse.

The topping out took place on Wednesday, July 19. Local officials were on-hand to congratulate NewCold on the occasion. Speakers also included the consul general (ambassador) from the Netherlands consulate in Atlanta.

Remaining construction includes the interior build-out and the exterior facade. The company is also commencing work now on a second phase. Finally, it will have rail access served by Norfolk Southern.

Construction firm Gray is overseeing the project. Right now, the work is supporting 150 construction jobs. This will increase to 350 temporary positions before the facility is complete.

The cold storage will begin operations in 2024. When it does, NewCold plans to hire for 170 jobs.
