On Tuesday, April 11, local officials held a groundbreaking ceremony for the final phase of Peeksville Road dirt road paving. The corridor aims to provide better travel options from Locust Grove to Ola when complete.

The goal to pave Peeksville Road dates back over two decades. The plan began to see significant progress towards completion in the last few years.

Under construction now is the final phase of Peeksville Road. This extends between Old Jackson Road and the Tussahaw Reservoir. The project is paving the dirt road to asphalt. In addition, the final phase is re-aligning Peeksville Road at Old Jackson. When complete, Peeksville and Old Jackson will be a four-leg intersection.

Henry County approved the construction bid in October 2022. McCoy Grading, Inc. of Greenville, GA won the bid. They submitted a bid worth $3,652,625.64. Road work should be complete by the end of 2023.

SPLOST V, approved by voters in 2019, is paying for construction. It also contributed towards right of way costs. Design work for the dirt road paving began under SPLOST IV. The SPLOST IV program had collections from 2014–2020.

The Bigger Picture

Some portion of Peeksville Road has appeared on every SPLOST project list — dating back to 1996. The county finished paving what can be referred to as phase I, between Keys Ferry and New Hope, in SPLOST III. Then, SPLOST IV spent $1.8 million to pave phase II between New Hope and the reservoir. That work finished in 2021. Now, the final phase has total costs of $4.3 million.

When complete, Peeksville Road will be a continuous paved road from highway 42 in Locust Grove to Keys Ferry Road in Ola. It remains to be seen if the new Peeksville Road at Old Jackson intersection will need improvements. Perhaps a future roundabout will make it on the SPLOST VI list; time will tell.
