The new East King at Floyd Road roundabout in Hampton is nearly complete. Contractors began pouring final asphalt on Wednesday, April 12.
The new intersection represents the first roundabout within the city. Hampton partnered with two private developers to help pay for the work. The roundabout facilities traffic flow for nearby existing and new subdivisions.
East King Roundabout
The city of Hampton hired McLeroy, Inc. of Zebulon, GA for the project. They approved the construction construction in June 2021. The project bid at the time was $1,259,865.40.
Two private developers agreed to contribute $250 thousand each towards the project. They included Jim Chapman Communities, who built the new townhome community, as well as the builder for Gates at Floyd Lake.
Access to East King Road from Georgia 20 closed in October 2022 for roundabout construction. It’s expected the roadway will reopen this week after the contractor lays the new asphalt.
After the road reopens, some work remains on the project. This will include grading slopes and installing sidewalks. In addition, any further improvements to Floyd Road south of the roundabout will be the responsibility of the Gates at Floyd Lake developer. Buyside Capital / Riz Communities purchased the property in July 2022.
Second Roundabout
In January, the Hampton council approved a grant application to build another roundabout. This project is at Hampton-Locust Grove Road and McDonough Street. The city applied for $900 thousand dollars in grant funds. Hampton has $380 thousand available in T-SPLOST funds to provide as a match.
The state plans to announce in June 2023 which applicants will receive the grant. Hampton and Henry County both applied for it this year.
