Henry County has issued a request for design proposals for the East Lake Road widening project. The project extends from State Route 155 to Airline Road in the Union Grove community.
East Lake Road Widening Design
Henry County published the design request on Thursday, April 17. Interested engineering firms have until Friday, May 16, 2025, at 3 pm to submit their proposal. Afterward, the county staff will review the proposals then recommend a firm to the board of commissioners. The BOC typically considers awarding a design contract about 2-3 months after the proposals close.
The East Lake Road widening project covers about 2.85 miles. The project will expand the existing two-lane road to a four-lane divided road. County widening projects typically incorporate sidewalks as well for pedestrians. The road’s design speed will be 45 mph.
Two notable intersections along the road are East Lake at Elliott Road and East Lake at Airline Road. Henry County has approved installing a temporary traffic signal at both locations. At the time of writing, the East Lake at Airline signal was not yet in service. An estimated activation date was not immediately available.
Henry County SPLOST VI was approved by voters in November 2024. Tax collections started on April 1, 2025. The program budgets $2.5 million for the project. This funding is to pay for the design work only. Right of way and construction funding will need allocated at a later date.
SPLOST VI Projects
Henry County has 17 major road projects in SPLOST VI. The majority, 12 of the 17, have design or design and right of way funding only. Projects in the Ola and Union Grove area include the following:
- SR 81 widening, phase II, Bethany Road to Keys Ferry, design & partial ROW;
- Airline Road extension, Rodgers Road to SR 81, ROW & construction;
- East Lake Road widening, SR 155 to Airline Road, design only;
- Keys Ferry Road extension, SR 81 to North Ola Road, design, ROW and construction; and
- Snapping Shoals Road improvements, North Ola Road to River Road, ROW & construction.
In addition, Henry County T-SPLOST has the state route 81 widening project between Postmaster Drive and Bethany Road. The project is presently buying right of way. Georgia DOT and Henry County estimate the road widening will accept construction bids before the end of the year.
