Henry County has approved a design engineer for the Willow Lane widening project. This is the first of several design contracts that SPLOST VI collections will pay for them.

Willow Lane Widening Design

The Willow Lane widening project extends from Jonesboro Road to Bridges Road. The project plans to widen the road to have four travel lanes. Those familiar with the location will know part of this section already has four lanes. A center median is also already in place. This should help to shorten the project’s construction time.

Henry County solicited design proposals in January 2025 for the project. The board approved the design contract at their April 15 meeting. The most responsive proposal was from Transystems of Sandy Springs, GA. They submitted a cost proposal of $967,269.00.

The engineer’s initial concept envisions a roundabout at the entrance to Birch Creek Elementary School. They shared a visual rendering of this concept with the county. Please note this concept is not the final design and the concept may change before construction.

The SPLOST VI program has a total budget of $12.05 million for the Willow Lane widening project. It is a district 4 project.

Other Nearby Projects

The Willow Lane widening is one of several upcoming projects in the I-75 exit 221 / Jonesboro Road vicinity. The largest of those projects will be to widen Jonesboro Road between I-75 and North Mt. Carmel Road. This is west of the interstate. The project is presently buying right of way and it should start construction in 2026. The Jonesboro Road widening is part of T-SPLOST.

Another T-SPLOST project is the Mill Road widening. The Mill Road project is from Jonesboro Road to Peachtree Peddler’s Flea Market. That project will be starting construction this year. In the future, another project on Mill Road would extend the four-lane road further south to State Route 81.

Lastly, SPLOST VI includes design work for various road widening projects. Those include Oak Grove Road widening and Jonesboro Road (east) widening. One final SPLOST VI design project is to reconnect Bridges Road between Mt. Carmel Road and Willow Lane. These projects will be considered for construction funding in T-SPLOST 2. Voters will consider T-SPLOST 2 in 2026.
