Henry County started to accept design proposals from engineering firms for various road widening projects in January 2025. They have received proposals on five projects so far. The projects are all part of SPLOST VI.

Design for Road Widening Projects

Before any construction can occur or right of way purchased to widen a road, every project must first start with design work. This phase is referred to as preliminary engineering at the state and federal level. The county accepted proposals on three projects in January and three more in February. One of those projects had no proposals received; the county is presently re-advertising it.

All road widening projects contemplate widening the current two-lane road to a four-lane road. After the county receives the design proposals, then staff will review each proposal. The county can then negotiate a contract with the highest-scoring firm. The board of commissioners will consider awarding a design contract for each project in the upcoming months.

Jonesboro Road widening, West, Phase II

First, the Jonesboro Road widening, west, phase II project extends from North Mt. Carmel Road to the Clayton County line. The county received six design proposals in January.

Jonesboro Road widening, west, phase I extends from I-75 to North Mt. Carmel Road. That project is being funded by Henry County Transportation SPLOST. It is presently buying right of way.

Willow Lane widening

Secondly, the Willow Lane widening is from Jonesboro Road to Bridges Road. About half of this corridor is already four lanes. The county received five design proposals.

The Willow Lane widening is fully-funded by SPLOST VI. This means funding is available for right of way and construction. Several of the other projects on this list are design only. Subsequent funding by a later SPLOST or T-SPLOST program will be necessary to build them.

Jodeco Road widening

Thirdly, the Jodeco Road widening project is from I-75 to Hudson Bridge Road. The county received five design proposals.

Oak Grove Road widening

Fourthly, the Oak Grove Road widening is from Jonesboro Road to Jodeco Road. Seven engineering firms submitted proposals for this project.

A temporary signal is being installed at Jodeco Road and Oak Grove Road. This signal will be temporary until the future road widening project. A second temporary signal is also forthcoming at East Lake and Airline Road.

East Atlanta Road widening

Lastly, the East Atlanta Road widening project is from Fairview Road to Rex Road. Six firms submitted proposals here.

The county was recently selected for federal funding to resurface East Atlanta Road. A start date for that construction is TBA. The federal funding amount was $850,000.

Other Projects

The Keys Ferry Road extension, a new road in the Ola community, was the aforementioned project which received no responses during its original RFP. A second request is now open until March 18.

In addition, the county is accepting proposals to design an intersection improvement at Flippen Road and McCullough Road. The RFP is accepting responses through April 1. The county’s procurement page is available online here.
