Henry County has published design requests for two intersections in the Dutchtown area. They are Mt Carmel Road at N Mt Carmel Road, and Flippen Road at McCullough Road. The projects are part of the county’s SPLOST VI program.
Dutchtown Intersections Design
Mt Carmel Road at N Mt Carmel Road
First, the county is looking to improve Mt Carmel Road at North Mt Carmel Road. This project includes re-aligning North Mt Carmel Road to align with South Mt Carmel Road. The county shared a design RFQ on March 7. Proposals are due by Friday, April 4. The county will consider hiring a design engineer after reviewing the proposals.
Plans to re-align the two roadways are not new. Astute observers will notice that right of way was preserved during the construction of The Preserve subdivision for the project. Instead, the county’s concept would turn North Mt Carmel immediately south of the subdivision. The concept depicts a roundabout at the new intersection.
The SPLOST VI program budgeted $5.82 million for the intersection improvement. This cost estimate should cover all costs to build the project. Voters approved SPLOST VI in November 2024; its collections begin in April 2025. The program runs through March 2031.
Flippen Road at McCullough Road
Similarly, the county has a request for design proposals for Flippen Road at McCullough Road. That proposal is open through Tuesday, April 1, 2025. The county can then consider hiring a design engineer thereafter.
The intersection is presently a four-way stop. It serves a large number of motorists going to and from the Dutchtown schools. Right now, those motorists have to turn from Flippen Road onto McCullough Road, and vice versa. When the Flippen Road extension — now under construction — is complete, motorists will be able to continue straight on Flippen Road to reach the Dutchtown schools.
The intersection improvement is a joint SPLOST VI project between districts 2 and 5. The county budgeted $5.82 million for the project.
