The Henry County Police Department is proud to announce the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council approved the establishment of a Henry County Police Academy. The state approved it in December 2024. The HCPD will be appointing Lieutenant Matthew Marlowe as the Academy Director for the Henry County Police Department Law Enforcement Training Academy.

The establishment of a police academy reflects Henry County’s commitment to training the highest quality law enforcement professionals in the state.

According to Major Casey McGlamery, county police officials first looked into the idea of their own police academy nearly a decade ago. After a great amount of research, planning and applying, the State gave the green light. McGlamery said there are so many benefits to bringing this training in-house.

“The Henry County Police Department prides itself on career development and advanced training for its public safety employees. As part of this training process, we must schedule advanced training through the state academies who also service all law enforcement officers in Georgia. [They] have limited capabilities in meeting the needs of our department,” said McGlamery. “HCPD is better served by maintaining its own certified state police training academy.”

The Henry County Police Department is a large police agency. It has an approved budget for 329 officers. Presently, the mandated initial training for a newly hired cadet takes place at the state academy. As part of the department’s process of onboarding newly hired non-certified officers, they are dependent on coordination with a state training facility for all training needs.

Officials expect that the initiative will impact retention rates by providing advanced training to current officers. It will also save taxpayers money as officers will no longer incur costs traveling to the state academy. All training will be in Henry County with instructors within the HCPD.

Staff will be in place early 2025 and the first class intends to start in July 2025.
