Locust Grove will receive $4 million dollars from the state towards its upcoming Peeksville Road extension. The new road will improve street connectivity in the downtown district.

The city was selected to receive funding from the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank. Locust Grove is the first entity in Henry County to receive this grant.

Peeksville Road Extension Grant

The Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank (GTIB) has been providing grant and low-interest loans for local road projects since 2010. The State Road & Tollway Authority administers the grant program. They typically accept applications once per year. Locust Grove applied for the grant this spring. They were notified in June of their selection to receive it.

This represents the first time a Henry County project will receive the grant. Henry County applied for the grant in 2023; however, they were not selected for it. The program favors applicants requesting both a loan and grant; whereas, the county only applied for the grant. In addition, recipients are often for projects close to or at the start of construction.

Locust Grove will receive $2 million as a grant and $2 million as a loan. The project’s total estimated costs are about $5 million. The grant award will contribute towards construction; whereas, the loan will go towards right of way costs. The loan will be repaid over the next ten years. The Locust Grove council approved accepting the grant and loan at their July 1 meeting.

The city has committed about $6.43 million this year on property acquisition. This includes property for both the new road and its downtown district. $4.63 million of that will be paid over ten years.

About the Project

The Peeksville Road extension extends between state route 42 and Frances Ward Drive. In addition, it will construct a new roundabout at Peeksville Road and Frances Ward.

Locust Grove expects to bid out construction for the new road this fall. Construction could then take about 12–18 months to complete.

The road extension will create better street grid connectivity in downtown Locust Grove. This will provide motorists with another option instead of Bill Gardner Parkway.
