A proposed self-storage business in McDonough has requested another postponement to July. The property, located at SR 81 and Lake Dow Road, has had ongoing discussions since April.
Your Storage Units is proposing a new location. It would be across the street from Publix at Lake Dow. They need the city council’s approval to build.

In fall 2023, the McDonough city council revised their code to permit indoor self-storage facilities. The businesses may locate in C-3 zoning, but must obtain a special use permit. The city council reviews the special use permit and they can approve or deny it.
This spring, the city received two requests for self-storage within the SR 81 at Lake Dow Road commercial node. The first, Mergenser Self-Storage, plans to build behind Chick-fil-A and Starbucks. The developer is proposing a four-story brick building — 3 stories above ground & a basement. They obtained approval in March.
Now, the council must consider the second request. Your Storage Units is requesting to build a facility with both indoor & outdoor storage. It would be on the north side of SR 81 east of Lake Dow Road. Various commercial outparcels are under construction now on this property.
Your Storage Units has one existing Georgia location according to their website. It is in Augusta. They have eight locations in Florida and two in South Carolina.
Postponed by the Applicant
The request was originally scheduled for the council to consider it in April. The applicant has requested several postponements while they update their proposed use. This is because city staff recommended denial of the original presentation. Staff citied the proposed building exteriors and outdoor storage was not conforming to the city code. The city planning commission also recommended denial of the request.
The applicant has since changed their proposed building materials and added increased landscaping. Based on these changes, city staff no longer objects to the special use permit.
The case was scheduled for the June 6 council meeting; however, the applicant requested a postponement to July 22. The council is now scheduled to consider it at that time. They must conduct a public hearing about the request. They may then decide whether to approve or deny it.
McDonough council meetings start at 6 pm. They take place at McDonough City Hall.
