Henry County officials and staff gathered on Thursday afternoon, December 14, at the groundbreaking for the new North Mt Carmel Recreation Center. The $15.5 million dollar venue should be complete by spring 2025.

Plans for a new recreation center began in 2019. At the time, voters approved the SPLOST V program. It set aside $6 million dollars to build a new venue. The county later hired an architect for the project in 2021.

The new recreation center will be located at North Mt. Carmel Park in Hampton. This is located on North Mt. Carmel Road, not far from Jonesboro Road and I-75. The new 36,706 square foot venue features the following:

  • two full sized basketball courts,
  • locker rooms,
  • lobby area,
  • concession area,
  • community meeting room,
  • three multi-purpose rooms, and
  • office space with a conference room and break room.

The second floor of the center will also feature an elevated walking track around the two basketball courts, a fitness area and yoga room.

Henry County estimates the venue will be complete by February 2025.

Construction Contract

The county solicited construction proposals to build the new facility this summer. Proposals closed on August 9, 2023. The county received one proposal from Cooper & Company General Contractors of Cumming, GA. Though this will be the company’s first project with Henry County, they have extensive experience around Atlanta and north Georgia.

County commissioners voted in October to award construction. The construction cost equals $15.5 million dollars. To pay for it, the county approved several budget amendments from other SPLOST projects. They also approved the use of $6.7 million in anticipated excess collections. These collections will be received in 2024.
