Henry County voters could be choosing two new state representatives in 2024, based on a draft map published by the Georgia House. The map would result in two open house seats, one each in McDonough and Hampton.

Georgia lawmakers started a special session on Wednesday to adopt new maps. The new maps are in response to a federal court ruling tossing the 2021 maps. The state has until Friday, December 8, to approve the new maps.

Right now, portions of seven districts represent Henry County. This would change to six districts on the new map. In addition, the number of districts located entirely within Henry County would change from one to two.

Districts 74 and 117 on the new map would be open seats. This means no incumbent resides within the areas. The two districts represent Lovejoy and Hampton, and McDonough and Luella, respectively. Voters would elect a new house member in 2024 to represent their area.

Districts 78, 115 and 116 would represent north Henry County. Their representatives are Demetrius Douglas, Regina Lewis-Ward and El-Mahdi Holly, listed in numerical order. The Dutchtown area would move into district 78. Representative Lauren Daniel, presently district 117, would be in district 81. The district contains much of east Henry County.

Three lawmakers who represent a portion of Henry County now would no longer represent the county. They are as follows:

  • Karen Mathiak – district 82 (Griffin),
  • Angela Moore – district 91 (Stonecrest), and
  • Clint Crowe – district 118 (Jackson).

Because these maps are a first draft, further revisions are possible before the legislators adopt their final map. For a look at the draft state senate map, check out our Monday article.
