Henry County hired an architect in June 2021 to design the new Mt Carmel Recreation Center. The county anticipates construction will begin before the end of the year.
The new facility will be at North Mt. Carmel Park near the Dutchtown school cluster. The project is through the SPLOST V program.

The new recreation center will be a 39,000 square foot facility, according to county reports. It will have two basketball courts as well as a fitness center and walking track. There will also be rooms available for classes and / or events. The new recreation center will compliment the existing soccer fields and playground at North Mt Carmel Park.
Henry County hired Southern A&E, LLC of Austell, GA as the project architect. The design cost was $300,000. As of April 2023, the project plans are under review by the county building department.
Also happening is a plan to extend sewer service to the park. The county and water authority entered into an agreement last November to construct a new sewer line. This will allow the recreation center to tap into sewer service rather than a septic tank. The cost estimate for this line extension is $600 thousand. The water authority is paying for it.
Once all plans are complete and gain approval, then Henry County can place the project out for bid. The county anticipates this occurring and construction able to begin before the end of 2023. The county has not shared their estimated construction timeframe; however, a similar recreation center in Cherokee County required 18 months to build. With this in mind, the project could open in 2025.
Until the county accepts construction bids, it is also not known what the build will cost. The county budgeted $6 million for the project. The aforementioned project in Cherokee County, opened earlier this year, cost $10.4 million to build.
