The Locust Grove council approved an application for a new traffic signal at state route 42 and Bethlehem Road. This was a requisite move with the state planning to install a new signal at the location.

Council approval occurred at the March 20 meeting. This also allows the city to financially contribute to project costs if the state needs its assistance. Locust Grove previously budgeted transportation SPLOST funds for the project.

SR 42 at Bethlehem Road Signal

Georgia DOT committed funds last year towards a new signal at state route 42 and Bethlehem Road. The dollar amount, $194 thousand, is below the $200k threshold the state can allocate for a quick response project. The state handled in-house the design work for the new signal. These design plans are undergoing final revisions.

Part of the work will include constructing a new northbound left-hand turn lane. Because of this, construction costs may exceed the amount GDOT allocated. The city has $200,000 available in transportation SPLOST to help with costs.

Based on project documents, the new signal will have a dedicated northbound left-hand turn light. This will help provide safer passage from state route 42 onto Bethlehem Road.

Last week, Georgia DOT released the concept layout for I-75 at Bethlehem Road. The future project will build a new interstate exit near Bethlehem Road as well as a new four-lane road. The proposed project would keep a traffic light at the current 42 and Bethlehem Road. It also proposes a second traffic light further north where the new Bethlehem will intersect highway 42.

MHF News will continue to share updates about the new traffic signal as they become available.
