Photos of damaged doors, rusted toilet seats and missing locks prompted the McDonough council to authorize immediate funds for repairs at Richard Craig Park. Council approval occurred during the March 2, 2023 meeting.

The council approved up to $30,000 for city staff to implement the repairs. The city’s ARPA funding will pay for the work.

Richard Craig Park Repairs

Richard Craig Park is located off highway 155 within the city of McDonough. The park is home to a large tennis center and baseball fields. In 2022, the state legislature dedicated highway 155 in the vicinity of the park to Joeann Compton, a longtime tennis coach.

At the March 2 meeting, recently promoted City Administrator Steve Morgan showed the council images of the park’s current status. Missing door locks, rusted stalls and toilets, and a general state of disrepair was the status. Morgan emphasized these are city structures. He further explained the park hosts several wheelchair tennis events, but the restrooms are not accessible.

The council approved funds for the repairs. New toilet fixtures, repairing the doors (replacing where need be) and updating the restroom to be wheelchair-accessible are all part of the work. City staff should be beginning the work ASAP after parts come in.

Mayor Vincent conveyed to the rest of the council other discussions would be forthcoming about repairs at all of the city parks. The city set aside a portion of its ARPA funds for park repairs.
