The intersection of Racetrack Road at Iris Lake Road in McDonough will soon see major changes. In addition to a new service station under construction, Henry County recently awarded the contract to build a new roundabout.

The new roundabout is a joint SPLOST V project between the county and city of McDonough. The service station is building under a commercial zoning approved by the city during the mid-2000s.

Racetrack Road Roundabout

Design work for the new roundabout began in fall 2020. American Engineers, Inc. of Acworth, GA handled project design at a cost of $102,000. Now, county commissioners awarded construction for the project during their November 29, 2022 meeting.

Wilson Construction Management of Norcross, GA will build the new roundabout. They submitted the low bid valued at $1,510,084.07. Following notice to proceed, the contractor will have 300 days to complete the project.

The city of McDonough will contribute $1,132,536 towards the project cost. Council members approved the cost-share with Henry County at their November 21 council meeting. Funds from SPLOST V and T-SPLOST will pay the city’s share.

Henry County will cover the remaining costs using SPLOST V funds. Both district I and district III budgeted funds for the project at a 50 / 50 split.

New Service Station

Construction began in August 2022 on a new service station. The gas station is at the northwest corner of Racetrack Road and Iris Lake Road.

McDonough approved commercial zoning for the property when the adjacent Iris Lake Villages subdivision first built about fifteen years ago. The northeast corner also has commercial zoning.

Clipper Petroleum Inc. of Flowery Branch, GA will operate a BP station at the location. The company, founded in 1997, operates service stations in metro Atlanta and northeast Georgia. Racetrack Road will be their first location in Henry County.

Residents can reasonably expect construction to finish in 2023 for the new convenience store as well as the roundabout.
