Where are Henry County residents moving from? Take a look.

You’ve heard the news about Henry County once again being the fastest-growing county in the metro Atlanta area. But where are new residents moving from? Here is a look at those numbers.

Information published by the IRS provided this outlook. Specifically, the IRS identifies a change in primary address on federal tax returns year-to-year then summarizes that data. The most recently available data set is for years 2019 to 2020.

Who is moving to Henry County?

Between 2019-2020, roughly 21,890 new residents moved to Henry County. Of these, 15,370 residents already lived in Georgia. Another 6,470 moved to the county from another state.

By comparison, about 18,420 residents moved out of Henry County during the same time period. This breaks down to 13,660 remained in Georgia and 4,730 moved to another state.

Looking at residents moving here from elsewhere in Georgia, here were the top five counties of origin:

  • Clayton County – 5,160 residents
  • DeKalb County – 2,130
  • Fulton County – 1,740
  • Spalding County – 790
  • Gwinnett County – 710

The next five counties were all either metro Atlanta counties or neighboring counties. They were Cobb, Newton, Rockdale, Butts and Fayette Counties.

Next, about one-half of the residents moving to Henry County from another state were from other southern states. Residents moving here from Florida previously lived in the Miami area (480 residents), Orlando (160) and Tampa (100). Elsewhere in the south, over 100 residents each moved from Alabama, North Carolina and Texas.

Finally, looking across the entire country, Henry County welcomed one-hundred newcomers each from Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California. About 500 residents moved to Henry County from the New York metropolitan area. Altogether, the other regions of the country each saw 600–700 residents locate to Henry County. Those regions are Northeast, Midwest and West.

Values printed above represent the number of residents who moved to Henry County between 2019 and 2020; numbers are rounded off to the closest value of ten.
