The Henry County Board of Commissioners met on Wednesday, September 8. During the meeting, they considered a contract for aquatic center design services. Following discussion, the board tabled the contract.
The board’s discussion centered on the venue’s location and whether Jodeco Road should remain the site. Earlier this year, commissioners selected the Bridges at Jodeco development to house the aquatic center.
Aquatic Center Design
Henry County received proposals in July from qualified firms to provide design services. County staff reviewed the proposals. Following review, staff recommended Architecture Unlimited of Matthews, NC to design the aquatic center. The company provided a quote of $1.1 million. SPLOST V funds are paying for the project.
Architecture Unlimited has completed design work for several aquatic centers. Examples include the Neptune Island Water Park in South Carolina.
Design is estimated to last six to eight months. The work includes the following:
- stakeholder meetings to develop the venue’s space needs,
- schematic design to refine the site layout, and
- construction documents to finalize the building design.
Commissioners were against awarding a design contract until the venue location is final. At this time, Henry County has not yet received title for the land donation off Jodeco Road.
Aquatic Center Location
In March, commissioners requested a sixty-day deadline for the Jodeco Road property. The deadline passed in May without the county receiving the land donation. Since then, county staff continue to be in discussions with the property owner.
In addition, board members expressed a desire for staff to begin looking at other sites. Earlier this year, other possible sites were Mill Road and Red Hawk Park. During Wednesday’s meeting, Chair Harrell stated the board would reconsider the location (if need be) in two weeks. The next board meeting is on Tuesday, September 21.
