
Earlier this month, Georgia DOT awarded a two-year road sign replacement project. The project includes a little more than one-hundred miles of I-75. Sign work will last through summer 2023.
Georgia DOT awarded the contract to ALS of North Carolina, Inc. of Fayetteville, NC. They submitted the lowest bid valued at $18,005,941.97. Two other vendors submitted bids of $22.7 million and $25 million, respectively. The contract completion date is August 31, 2023.
The state received bids on June 18, 2021. Project award occurred on July 2, 2021. The I-75 road sign project was the highest-valued contract during the June letting.
Road Sign Project
Project limits begin at state route 215 / exit 109 in Dooly County. They stop at Bill Gardner Parkway / exit 212 in Henry County. Other counties within the project include the following:
- Butts
- Bibb
- Crawford
- Houston
- Lamar
- Monroe
- Peach, and
- Spalding.
The project will replace overhead exit signs and mile markers. There are 165 overhead signs within the project. In addition, the contract includes roadside information signs. Signs such as distance markers to major cities and state park info will see updates. Finally, the contractor will replace guardrails and support posts at each sign.
The contract restricts any lane closures to the following hours:
- Single lane closures are allowed daily between the hours of 9 pm to 6 am Monday through Friday.
- Double lane closures and pacing of traffic are allowed daily between the hours of 11 pm to 5 am Monday through Friday.
The entirety of the project is located within congressional district 3.
I-20 Resurfacing
In addition, the June letting included resurfacing 19.6 miles of I-20 / SR 402. Though adjacent to each other, the work was bid out in two segments. The resurfacing work is in Newton, Morgan and Walton Counties.
E. R. Snell Contractor, Inc. of Snellville, GA submitted the low bid for both segments. The projects include the following:
- 12.503 miles beginning at the Walton / Newton County line and extending east of SR 83 at a cost of $5.3 million.
- 7.100 miles beginning east of SR 142 and extending to the Walton / Newton County line at a cost of $3.2 million.
Both projects have a contract completion date of May 31, 2022.
