New Playground Equipment

On Tuesday, March 9, Henry County awarded two bids for new playground equipment. The projects provide new playgrounds at Nash Farm Park off Jonesboro Road and Sandy Ridge Park off Keys Ferry Road.

The first project at Nash Farm was awarded to GameTime / Dominica Recreation Products, Inc. of Longwood, FL. The project cost is $236,199.85.

The second project at Sandy Ridge Park was also awarded to GameTime. The project replaces the current playground for $101,974.26.

The county intends to use capital project funding for both projects.

House District 90 Runoff

Voters in house district 90 cast their ballots on Tuesday, March 9, for state representative. The runoff election featured Stan Watson and Angela Moore after no candidate received a majority in February.

Angela Moore received 1,626 votes compared to 1,130 votes for Stan Watson. Once the state certifies the results, Moore will join the legislative session already in progress.

House district 90 represents parts of DeKalb, Henry and Rockdale Counties.

McDonough Variance Request

On Thursday, March 4, the McDonough council held their monthly workshop meeting. The council approved a commercial variance request on Avalon Court. The request increases the average roof height to 42’ 9 1/4”. By comparison, city code allows 40’ without a variance.

The council approved a modification of zoning conditions in January 2020 for the property. The project is building an Extended Stay America brand hotel. Following the variance approval, the hotel will include four stories with 84 guest rooms. The hotel will be south of the existing Hampton Inn.

The council voted 4-3 to approve the variance. Mayor Copeland, council members Elrod, Benjamin Pruett and Roger Pruitt voted in favor; whereas, council members Stewart, Varner and Vincent voted against the request.
