Henry County commissioners will revisit the topic of selecting a location for the county’s aquatic center during their meeting on Tuesday, February 2. The commission previously split 3-3 when discussing sites in January.

The board meeting starts at 9 am, and will be available to view on the county website. Discussing the aquatic center location is the last agenda item before public comment.

Aquatic Center Sites

When first presented with site options, the board split 3-3 on two locations: Mill Road near Jonesboro Road, and Red Hawk Park off Henry Parkway. Possible locations at the intersections of Jodeco Road at Tunis Road, and Willow Lane at Bridges Road were dropped.

Chair Harrell, Commissioners Wilson and Barham voted in favor of the Red Hawk Park location. Commissioners Clemmons, Thomas and Holmes voted in support of Mill Road.

Later in the month, Chair Harrell brought to the board’s attention the possibility of working with the city of Stockbridge on a location. She asked staff to review the feasibility of Jodeco Road at I-75. The Bridges at Jodeco developer is offering the county fourteen acres for the venue. If the county chooses to build on Jodeco Road, the aquatic center will serve as an anchor tenant helping to attract new businesses to the development.

Once the board decides a location, then county staff can proceed forward with acquiring an architect for the project. Building an aquatic center is the headliner project within SPLOST V. The facility has a total budget of $22 million dollars.

Survey

Thank you to everyone that participated in my brief survey. Out of 185 respondents, over 60% favor Jodeco Road for the aquatic center. In second, one-third selected Red Hawk Park as the location they would like to see. Finally, eight respondents picked Mill Road and four were not sure or preferred not to answer.

This article was updated following the conclusion of the survey.
