Georgia DOT shared an update on January 20 about the upcoming bridge replacement on state route 81 over the South River. GDOT awarded a contract to replace the existing bridge in July.
The existing bridge was built in 1948. The project will utilize an offsite detour during construction.
Project Update
GDOT expects Wright Brothers Construction Company to mobilize next week, the week of January 25, and begin clearing February 1. The detour should begin by mid-March and be complete by December 2021 barring any setbacks.
The assigned state highway detour totals 34 miles. The detour follows state routes 20 and 212 from downtown McDonough to Zion Baptist Church before turning towards SR 81 at 212. State route 36 is also an option to traverse the South River.
GDOT selected the off-site detour method and duration to reduce environmental and property impacts, while expediting construction and reducing cost.

Bridge Replacement
The project was awarded to Wright Brothers Construction Company, Inc. of Charleston, TN in the amount of $4,299,065.91. When complete, the new bridge will be 345’ in length and feature a deck width of 43.25’ including an eight foot shoulder on each side. By comparison, the existing bridge is 27’ wide.
