House Bill 898, sponsored by state rep. Mike Wilensky (D – Dunwoody), would codify a local government’s option to consider impacts to the local school system when making zoning decisions. Stockbridge representative Demetrius Douglas is a co-signer on the bill.
HB 898 would amend Georgia code to add the following: “[zoning] standards may include the consideration of the effect of the proposed zoning decision on local school systems and the potential overcrowding of schools within such local school systems.â€
The bill was filed with the house hopper on February 5, 2020, and as of February 17, has not been assigned to committee. The Georgia General Assembly has stood in adjournment since February 5 so that lawmakers could continue work on the state budget and will reconvene on Tuesday, February 18, for their next legislative day.
