Henry County DOT will install a new four-way stop at Bill Gardner Parkway and Lester Mill Road following a string of accidents despite attempts to improve the intersection. The new stop signs will be installed on Thursday, February 27, weather permitting.
Lester Mill Road was paved and realigned in 2017 as a SPLOST IV project. Since then, several accidents have often resulted in injuries. There has been one fatality when a motorist did not stop on Lester Mill Road and entered the intersection at travel speeds.
District I Commissioner Johnny Wilson has worked with Henry County DOT to install flashing stop signs and additional rumble strips on Lester Mill Road, a flashing “intersection ahead†sign on Bill Gardner Parkway, and street lighting at the intersection. These preventive measures have not resulted in a reduction of accidents, and following four accidents in January, Commissioner Wilson asked county staff at the February 4 board meeting to implement the four-way stop.
The commissioner will continue to work with county staff to develop a more permanent solution such as a traffic signal or roundabout. $250,000 in SPLOST V funding was budgeted for the intersection from district I funding.
