The Atlanta Regional Commission started accepting applications this week from local governments to receive federal dollars towards transportation projects. Over $450 million dollars are available to be awarded over the next six fiscal years.
The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) Project Solicitation is conducted biannually by the ARC to award funding for roadway projects, public transit improvements, and planning studies. Last held in spring 2017, counties and cities located within the Atlanta Metropolitan Planning Organization may submit requests.
The application window opened on Monday, August 12, and local governments have until Friday, October 11, to apply. Afterwards, ARC staff will evaluate the requests with initial funding recommendations anticipated in Q1 2020.
Local Impacts
All projects require a twenty percent local match to secure the eighty percent federal funding. Most local governments, including Henry County, use the SPLOST program to budget the required local dollars.
The Henry County Board of Commissioners has not yet discussed which projects the county will apply for funding. At a minimum, it is expected the county will apply for construction funding for widening projects along Rock Quarry Road in Stockbridge and State Route 81 in McDonough. The two projects received design funding in the 2015 solicitation followed by right of way funding in 2017.
The commissioners will likely discuss the application during their September meeting.
