The Hampton city council has adopted a resolution in support of allowing citizens to vote on casino gambling in Georgia. A statewide referendum would be required for voters to legalize gambling in the state, if members of the general assembly place it on the ballot.

City manager Alex Cohilas and the council stressed the city was not taking a position on the ballot question itself, only in favor of citizens having their voices heard at the ballot box. The question about casino gambling has dominated local headlines after Atlanta Motor Speedway proposed a casino and destination resort at the racetrack.

Members of the Georgia General Assembly must pass the proposed referendum by a two-thirds majority in both chambers before voters can decide the topic. Speaker of the House David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) voiced support behind a statewide referendum over the weekend, but senate leadership wasn’t so quick to jump onboard. Lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan considered passing gambling low on the legislative priorities when speaking to reporters on Monday.

If residents would like to see the question appear on November’s ballot, they are encouraged to contact their state representative and state senator. Contact information for members of the Henry County delegation has been included below.
