Georgia DOT has major plans to improve traffic flow in Conyers by installing what Moving Henry Forward believes to be Georgia’s second single-point urban interchange. We’re familiar with one other installation of its kind at Georgia 400 and Lenox Road in Buckhead.
The state held a public information open house this month for its $65 million dollar project to install a single-point urban interchange (SPUI) at I-20 and state route 20 / 138. While a conventional interstate exit relies on two traffic signals to operate, the SPUI consolidates traffic flow into one central light.
Right of way acquisition is scheduled to begin in late 2020. Construction is funded in FY 2024.
As part of the project, the existing bridge over I-20 will be replaced. The new structure will support four 12-ft travel lanes in each direction, a 32-ft median containing two 12-ft turn lanes, an outside shoulder, and sidewalks. The bridge will measure 273′-3″ in width. By comparison, the bridge over I-75 at Eagles Landing Parkway is 166′-4″ in width.
State Route 20 / 138 will be widened from an existing six lanes to eight between Dogwood Drive and south of Old Salem Road. The project will double the number of through lanes on the I-20 bridge from four to eight.
The project also includes a new roundabout on Dogwood Drive northeast of the interchange with a dedicated access point to I-20 westbound. The new access point will parallel I-20 underneath the state route 20 overpass before merging with the existing on-ramp and finally into the interstate. To accommodate the access ramp, the I-20 westbound offramp will be reconstructed with a new single-lane bridge.
