The Hampton council has approved construction plans for a new roundabout at McDonough Street and Hampton-Locust Grove Road. The project is near the Fortson Library and Bear Creek Senior Center. The city will be using T-SPLOST funds to pay for the project.

McDonough Street Roundabout

The city of Hampton accepted construction bids in April 2025 for the McDonough Street roundabout. The city received bids from seven contractors. East Coast Grading, Inc. of Madison, GA submitted the lowest bid. Their cost was $1,512,131.37. The council approved this amount at their May 13, 2025 meeting. The contractor will have 450 days once work begins to complete the project. This is equal to 15 months.

Presently, Hampton-Locust Grove Road meets McDonough Street at an off-angle intersection. The project will convert this intersection to a roundabout. Roundabouts are a proven safety countermeasure, according to the Federal Highway Administration, to improve roadway operations and reduce the potential for crashes.

In 2023, Hampton applied for a grant to pay for the project. The city was not successful in that grant application. The concept at the time would re-align Hampton-Locust Grove Road to meet North Avenue. This would have formed a four-legged intersection. According to present-day construction documents, the city will not be making this change. Instead, the project will improve the existing three-leg intersection into a three-leg roundabout.
