Henry County commissioners approved a resolution Tuesday in support of bringing more skate parks to the county. The resolution is in collaboration with the Tony Hawk Foundation.

Henry County Skate Parks

Presently, there exists one skate park in Henry County. It is located at McBrayer Park in Hampton. The city renovated it in 2021. The county’s parks master plan recommends three additional skate parks. They are at the following locations:

  • North Henry – potentially in Village United Park,
  • Central Henry – at a central location near McDonough or Eagles Landing, and
  • Southeast Henry – Sandy Ridge Park.

The county completed its parks master plan in 2024. The Henry Reporter shared a comprehensive overview of the plan following its adoption in August.

On February 4, 2025, Henry County adopted a resolution in support of skateparks. The resolution identifies the following objectives:

  1. The Board hereby expresses its full support for the development of public skate parks in partnership with the Tony Hawk Foundation.
  2. Henry County will work collaboratively with the Tony Hawk Foundation and
community stakeholders to identify a suitable location, secure funding and ensure the
successful design and construction of the skate park.
  3. The Board directs appropriate county departments to assist in facilitating necessary
approvals, planning and coordination efforts for the skate park’s development.

The Tony Hawk Foundation, founded by pro skater Tony Hawk, provides grants to assist in skatepark construction. The organization changed its name to The Skatepark Project in June 2020. According to their website, grants are available up to $25,000.

The full cost to build a new skate park was not immediately known. The aforementioned renovations in Hampton had a cost of $130,000. The city of Byron, Georgia, near Macon, received a National Parks Service grant last summer worth $250,000 for a skate park. The county has funding set aside in SPLOST VI for general park improvement projects.

Board members expressed excitement at bringing more skate parks to Henry County. They unanimously passed the resolution.
