Henry County Schools is proposing changes to the 2025-2026 school calendar. They have also shared draft calendars for 2026-2027 and 2027-2028.
The calendars are available for public review until early February. The school board will consider adopting them at their February 10 meeting.
Henry County Schools Calendars 2025-2028
The school district is proposing to include two additional teacher development days on the 2025-2026 calendar. This would replace two already-approved early release days. Instead, students would have asynchronous learning days. This is essentially an online learning day when students complete work from home. Those days would be the following:
- Friday, October 10, 2025, and
- Friday, March 13, 2026.
The asynchronous learning days are also reflected on the 2026-2028 calendars. Teachers would participate in a half-day of district professional development, then have a half-day of planning time. Board Chair Sophe Pope remarked “I am grateful for those asynchronous days to be dedicated teacher planning and preparation time. I hope those will be protected and used as such.”

First and Last Day of School
The 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 calendars would move the first day of school to start on a Monday. Those days are Monday, August 3, 2026 and Monday, August 2, 2027. Board member Makenzie McDaniel shared “this calendar reminds me when I was a student. We were in school on the first Monday [of August].”
The last day of school continues to be on Wednesday during the last week of May. The last days are Wednesday, May 26, 2027, and Wed., May 24, 2028. Both calendars provide 179 days of student learning.
The calendars also add two additional early planning days for teachers. This would allow teachers, in addition to students, to be out for summer before Memorial Day.
Fall Break Moves to October
Finally, the 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 calendars would move the district’s fall break to the first full week of October. According to the district office, previous public comments had asked for the change. This would also align with the conclusion of the first nine-week grading period. The second nine-week period would begin when students return. The proposed dates are October 5-9, 2026 and October 4-8, 2027.
Public Comments
Henry County Schools will begin accepting public comments in the coming days. They will accept those comments until early February. More information how to share your feedback will be made available on the district website. The board will then consider approving the calendars on Monday, February 10.
