
Residents in Ola will soon see road work along highway 81. Georgia DOT approved a maintenance contract for crack sealing and new pavement markers.
This work extends the longevity of the road. The state last resurfaced highway 81 in 2016–17.
Highway 81 Maintenance Contract
Georgia DOT advertised the highway 81 maintenance work in February 2024. The state received two bids. They awarded the contract to Wall Asphalt Services, Inc. of Franklin, GA. The contract cost is $309,390.
Wall Asphalt Services will have 160 days to complete the work following the pre-work meeting. They must start the work within 30 days after the pre-work meeting, and complete 99% of work within 140 days. The work consists of crack sealing, and applying new pavement markers and striping. The project limits are between the McDonough Square and the Henry / Newton County line.
Other Maintenance Work
Other ongoing maintenance work includes guardrail replacement along I-75. Georgia DOT approved this contract in summer 2023 at a cost of $13.9 million. It includes replacing guardrails at various locations in three counties. They are Henry, Houston and Monroe Counties. The estimated completion date for all work is September 2024.
In August 2023, the state approved a contract for concrete slab repair along I-75. Specifically, the contract covered work between mile markers 226–228.5. This is from Walt Stephens Road to state route 138. The contractor, Precision 2000, Inc., had up to six months to complete the work. The cost was $382 thousand.
Finally, the state awarded a contract for lane striping at interstate exits. The contract award was in October 2023. The work covered I-75 exits in Butts and Henry Counties. Examples of the work include reapplying the crosswalks, turn arrows and stop bars on exit ramps. Peek Pavement Marking, LLC submitted the low bid valued at $2.53 million. They had 200 days to complete the work.
