Construction has began on a new sidewalk in front of Ola Elementary School. Henry County SPLOST V funds are paying for the project.
The county approved a construction contract last November. Total project costs are about $860,000.
Correction: the photograph above shows construction for an underground pipe. Construction for the new sidewalk has not yet started in front of Ola Elementary School; the contractor is building first the new entrance into North Ola Park. MHF News apologies for the incorrect information.
Ola Elementary Sidewalk
The new sidewalk extends from the southern property line of Ola Elementary School to the entrance of North Ola Park. Work is limited to the east side of the road. The project length measures four-tenths of one mile. In addition, the project is building a new entrance into North Ola Park. This includes a center median. Work should be complete by fall 2023.
DAF Concrete, Inc. of Jonesboro, GA is building the project for $781,464. Falcon Design of Stockbridge previously designed the work for about $80 thousand. No right of way acquisition was necessary, except for a permanent easement from the school board to Henry County.
To cover project expenses, the county approved a budget amendment worth $725,953 from district III park improvements to district III sidewalks. The park improvements fund most recently paid for a new concession stand at North Ola Park.
Following the budget amendment and sidewalk project, funds remaining include $637,454 for park improvements and $110,171 for new sidewalks. These funds are specific to district III.
Private development will be constructing a new sidewalk further south from Ola Elementary. A new subdivision began construction in late 2022 between Publix and the school. When complete, a continuous sidewalk will exist between state route 81 and the park.
