The city of Hampton is seeking grant funds to build a new roundabout at McDonough Street and Hampton-Locust Grove Road. The city council approved the grant application during a special called meeting on Friday morning, January 20.

Henry County is also applying for the grant. They approved an application for three projects earlier this week.

McDonough Street Roundabout

The proposed McDonough Street roundabout is located near Fortson Library and Bear Creek Senior Center. Presently, Hampton-Locust Grove Road has an off-angle intersection with McDonough Street. The proposed design would shift the current intersection to the east. This will tie into North Avenue to form a four-leg roundabout.

The city is applying for $900,000 through the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank (GTIB) to help build the roundabout. Hampton has $380 thousand in T-SPLOST funding available to provide a local match.

The GTIB provides grants and low-interest loans to assist Georgia communities with transportation projects. The State Road and Tollway Authority, the administers of the grant, expects to announce this year’s recipients by either May or June 2023.

A preliminary cost estimate to build the roundabout equals $1.25 million. The city based this estimate on construction costs at East King Road and Floyd Road. The city’s first roundabout is nearly complete at the location.
