The McDonough city council held a special called meeting on January 22, 2021. During the meeting, the council approved a construction contract for Jonesboro Road Park.
The new park will be located south of Jonesboro Road near Wesley Lakes Blvd. Vehicle access will be through a right-in / right-out driveway off Jonesboro Road. The park is offset from Jonesboro Road and does not include the street frontage. German grocery store Lidl submitted plans to build three years ago before scaling down their introduction to Georgia. The company opened its first and currently only store in south metro Atlanta in Jonesboro during 2020.
The property consists of 23 acres. Henry County and the city of McDonough jointly acquired the property as part of a court settlement in 2008. The county assisted with stormwater design on the property, whereas McDonough is responsible for the park’s construction and maintenance.
About Jonesboro Road Park
Jonesboro Road Park will include a parking area with 55 spaces, 8’ wide walking trail, and 5’ wide connecting sidewalk from Jonesboro Road. The majority of the property will be left as open space.
The council awarded the construction contract to McLeRoy Inc. of Zebulon, GA. The contractor submitted a low bid valued at $640,000. The contract includes a 10% contingency for a total cost of $704,000. City SPLOST IV funds will pay for the project cost.
In 2017, the county and city approved a modified agreement for the park. The amendment reduced the scope of work and transferred the long-term care and maintenance of the property to McDonough. The original 2008 agreement called for organized team sports, including soccer fields and basketball courts, two pavilions and a playground. Funding was not available for the additional features.
A few days before the council meeting, Henry County awarded a construction contract to build a new park in Fairview. Construction costs total $3 million dollars for two multipurpose sports fields, a walking trail, concession stand and parking.
