Georgia DOT leadership has responded to the city of McDonough’s request for an update regarding the McDonough One-Way Pair project. The big question—when can residents expect its completion—has been answered: by the end of summer 2020.
The McDonough One-Way Pair project started construction in summer 2017 to construct an east-west one-way pair through downtown McDonough. By doing so, Jonesboro Road will have four travel lanes from I-75 to the McDonough Square. The project has three smaller construction sites in one contract:
- Jonesboro Road at Doris Street roundabout, new Geranium Drive, and Jonesboro Road widening west of the town square
- State Route 155 connector between McDonough city hall and Hardee’s
- State Route 81 extension near the Academy for Advanced Studies
The city requested Georgia DOT consider opening the SR 155 Connector and SR 81 extension in advance of other portions of the project. The state declined the request stating “to do so would negatively affect our construction staging, as well as the overall flow of traffic through the area.â€
The cause for the project’s delay has been a culvert located underneath the existing Jonesboro Road. Though replacing the culvert was not expected to become part of the project, work crews identified the need during construction.
The replacement of the culvert has required additional design work and environmental permitting. Those tasks were recently completed and the project is expected to resume construction by the end of March.
