Henry County commissioners approved the sale of county-owned land to Georgia DOT for right of way acquisition towards the widening of Georgia 20. The future right of way, from west to east, starts with the recycling center entrance and continues to Phillips Drive.
Georgia DOT will pay the county $1,142,605.00 for the transaction. Over half of the payment, or $605,000, is for the sentence enforcement property where the front row of parking will be removed.
The funds will be used to construct additional parking on the rear side of sentence enforcement. The county will also be required to relocate the entry way to the recycling center and a water valve near the jail annex.
Widening Georgia 20 lets for construction in May 2021
The 1.4 mile widening project extends from I-75 to Phillips Drive. The improvements will include four travel lanes, a five-foot sidewalk on the south side, and a ten-foot multiuse path on the north side.
Total project costs equal $30 million, with $25.4 million funded by house bill 170.
The project is actively buying right of way and the state plans to let the project for construction in May 2021. Construction will start six to eight weeks afterwards and last an estimated two to three years.
