

Update: the McDonough council voted 4-3 to approve the modification of zoning conditions. Mayor Copeland, council members Ben Pruett, Roger Pruitt, and Craig Elrod voted in favor of the request; whereas council members Stewart, Vincent, and Varner voted against the request.
The council will consider a moratorium against new hotels at their February 6 meeting.
The McDonough city council revisited a proposed extended-stay hotel at their January 21 meeting after splitting 3-3 on the request in November. The hotel is planned on Avalon Court in the I-75 exit 218 area.
In November, council woman Kam Varner made a motion to deny the request seconded by Sandra Vincent. Council members voting in favor of the motion to deny the application were Varner, Vincent, and Roger Pruitt. Mayor Copeland, council members Elrod and Stewart voted against the motion. Council member Ben Pruett was absent from the meeting.
The proposed development, submitted by TGC Group of Wichita, KS, will be an Extended Stay America brand. The Henry County Board of Commissioners denied a similar request for property off Jonesboro Road last summer.
The city council held a public hearing about the request in November. A public hearing was not held at meetings in December and January when the request was revisited. Council member Varner asked about a public hearing during the January meeting to which the mayor responded “no.â€
