This is part 2 of the GDOT projects series after a joint meeting between Georgia Department of Transportation project managers and the Henry County Board of Commissioners.
SR 20 / 81 between I-75 and Phillips Drive :: Construction 2019
SR 20 / 81 east of the interstate is being widened from two lanes to four lanes. This continues the existing four-lane segment that ends at Willow Lane. The project will be entering right of way acquisition in November 2017 and is scheduled to begin construction in February 2019. GDOT currently estimates two to three years for construction.
The project includes constructing a five-foot sidewalk and ten-foot multi-use path. These elements are becoming standard practice on GDOT projects to improve walking and biking access.
SR 20 / 81 @ McDonough Parkway Intersection
Part of the widening project will be the construction of a two-lane roundabout at the intersection of SR 20 / 81 and McDonough Parkway, as shown in the article photo.
Henry County SPLOST has an adjourning project to build the McDonough Parkway from SR 20 / 81 to Henry Parkway. This project and others like it will complete the McDonough Square bypass from SR 155 south to SR 20 north. The county will be bidding this project out for construction in November 2017; however, the contractor will not be tieing the new road into the intersection. This will be left to the state so as to not duplicate the expenditure of construction dollars at the intersection.
Moving Henry Forward asked the project manager if it would be possible to expedite the intersection once the widening project begins, so as to complete the square bypass and open up the new connection. It is too early in the process to know if this will be feasible.
US 23 / SR 42 between SR 138 and I-675 :: Construction 2021
US 23 / SR 42 is being widened from two lanes to four lanes to provide better connectivity between Stockbridge and I-675 north. This project is partially in north Henry County and partially in Clayton County. The project is scheduled to enter right of way acquisition in 2018 and begin construction in 2021.
The project will include a five-foot sidewalk and ten-foot multi-use path.
US 23 / SR 42 between the McDonough Square and SR 138 :: Construction 2022
This project will widen US 23 / SR 42 from two lanes to four lanes to better connect McDonough and Stockbridge. The project is currently in the design stage. Right of way acquisition will begin in 2019 and construction is scheduled to start in 2022.
